오늘은 미국 대학을 준비하는 학생들을 위해 썸머 인턴쉽 & 리서치 프로그램에 대해 설명하겠습니다.
방학기간 동안 SAT를 집중 공부한다든지, 여름 썸머 캠프에 참여한다든지,
학생들은 계획을 세우고 알차게 보내고자 하죠.
방학은 수험생에게 있어 정말 중요합니다.
성적을 이 시기에 올려주는 것도 중요하지만, 이시기에 해야만 하는 것들이 있어요.
이시기를 놓치게 되면 대학 지원시 내 원서가 초라해질 수 있는 중요한 것.
바로 Extracurricular activities 와 Work Experience입니다.
미국 대학을 준비하는 학생이라면 중요성을 잘 알고 있으리라 봅니다.
거기에 조금 더 살을 붙이자면, Extracurricular activities 와 Work Experience를 준비하고 선택할 때
아무거나 선택해서는 안된다는 것입니다.
자신의 흥미와, 앞으로의 전공 흐름과 일맥 상통해야 한다는 것.
잊지 마세요..
예를 들어 경영학과에 진학하고자 할 땐, 경영학과 관련된 인턴십이나, 리서치 활동, 봉사활동, 과외활동을 통해
본인이 얼마나 경영학 관심이 있으며, 학업에 열정이 있는지를 보여줘야 합니다.
그리고 그것을 바탕으로 에세이에 정성스레 담아야 합니다. 보통의 지원자들이 이것을 바탕으로 에세이를 쓰잖아요.
제가 전에 작성한 "미국 명문대 합격 TIP, 명품 에세이 작성법"에 예시를 둔
8개 아이비리그 대학에 모두 합격한 콰시에닌의 에세이처럼 말이죠.
그러므로 한두 달 전공 관련 과외활동을 했다고, 과외활동을 다 했다고 보시면 안되겠습니다.
고등학교 초부터 미리 전공에 대한 포부와 계획을 갖고 꾸준히 성과를 이룬 계획 있는 모습이 보여야 하겠습니다.

1) Archaeology at Crow Canyon, Colorado
The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, in southwestern Colorado, offers the three-week High School Field School, where students assist staff archaeologists in excavations and research at the Crow Canyon Pueblo site. Students learn excavation techniques, artifact processing and conservation, and local history and anthropology while staying at the Crow Canyon lodge.

2) Archaeology at the Center for American Archaeology, Kampsville, Illinois
The Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois, also offers a High School Field School,
where students conduct research for one to three weeks on Midwestern prehistoric archaeological sites.

3) Ecology with the EarthWatch Institute
EarthWatch Institute offers numerous summer volunteer research and travel programs for high school students. Students can choose to research climate change in the Canadian Arctic, urban ecosystems in New York City, or sea turtle conservation in Mexico. Programs range from a few days to several weeks in length, and tuition includes lodging and meals at the research site.

4) Marine Biology with Sea Semester
Sea Semester offers summer research programs for high school students in marine biology, coastal environments, and oceanography. Participants in the three-week programs conduct research at one of Sea Semester's shore locations (including Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Catalina Island, California) and also spend time living and working on one of the program's research vessels.

5) Medicine at the National Institute of Health
The National Institute of Health (NIH) offers the eight-week Summer Internship Program in health-care and disease research for high school students, held at the main NIH campus in Bathesda, Maryland. Applications for the internship program are competitive, and chosen candidates receive a stipend to work alongside researchers in fields such as oncology, pediatrics, aging, and environmental health.

6) Medicine at the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program
The Standford Medical Youth Science Program offers a free, campus-based, five-week summer research program for low-income and minority high school juniors and seniors. Students learn science research and writing skills while exploring careers in the health sciences.

7) NIH Summer Internship Program
The National Institutes of Health offers students 16 and older a chance to conduct biomedical research with leading scientists at laboratories in Maryland, North Carolina, Arizona, Montana and Michigan. Students attend lectures, learn about careers and present research posters. To participate, high school students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Programs last for at least eight weeks, usually beginning in May or June. Students receive monthly stipends. The program also is open to college students and graduates.

8) Michigan Math & Science Scholars
The Michigan Math & Science Scholars High School Summer Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor encourages students to study math and science. Classes of 15 students receive instruction from University of Michigan professors in various departments and international instructors. Students can attend one or two 2-week sessions each summer, working in research and computer labs. Students can participate in field work and hands-on experiments. Students can stay in dorms on campus or commute from home, and weekend trips and other activities are offered.

9) Drexel University College of Medicine
The Drexel University College of Medicine High School Summer Research Internship Program allows students at Philadelphia-area high schools to participate in 25 to 40 hours per week of biomedical research activities. Students attend seminars and learn how to use library and online resources for research. In October, students present their research on campus at the College of Medicine's annual research day. During the 8-week program, students receive a $1,500 stipend. To participate, students must be 16 and obtain a work permit.
10) Cornell University's Research Apprenticeship in Biological Sciences
Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions offers the Research Apprenticeship in Biological Sciences program each summer for high school juniors and seniors. Students work in laboratories for 40 hours a week with Cornell professors, post-doctoral fellows and students on a research project for publication. Students can earn six college credits. Research topics include molecular biology, cancer research, animal physiology and epidemiology. Students should have some knowledge of cell biology.

3) Boston University Research Internship in Science & Engineering Program
Boston State University offers a summer intern program to gifted high school seniors. High school students perform college level experiments using state-of-the-art laboratories in the presence of college science professors. Students perform research studies in astronomy, chemistry, engineering, medicine, biology, psychology and physics with guidance of a Boston University science mentor. Applicants must be American citizens entering senior year of high school to meet eligibility requirements, and the six-week honors class internship may be completed while residing on campus by students who are unable to commute.

4) The National Institutes of Health
According to the U.S. Department of Human Services, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers numerous summer internships to high school students over the age of 16. Internships are available for high school students at the main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. NIH student internships focus exclusively on science and biomedical research, and include lectures and informal lunch meetings for students working side-by-side with top world renowned scientists. NIH summer high school internship programs typically begin in May or June and last approximately eight weeks.
